Cholera Outbreak in Ghana: A Race Against Time

Ghana is grappling with a widespread cholera outbreak that has claimed at least 49 lives, with over 6,145 cases reported across five regions. The outbreak, which began in October 2024, has prompted a multi-sectoral response from the Ministry of Health, including vaccination campaigns and public health education.

The hardest-hit regions include Greater Accra, Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern. Winneba is currently facing a severe outbreak, with the Winneba Government Hospital struggling with shortages of water and medical supplies. Local leaders have highlighted the dire conditions, noting that the hospital has been without running water, making it difficult for healthcare workers to provide adequate care.

The Ghana Health Service is working with various stakeholders to curb the outbreak, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and sanitation. Vaccination efforts are underway, with campaigns targeting high-risk areas to prevent further spread. Active cases are concentrated in the Central Region, where health officials are striving to manage the situation effectively.
