In a significant health development, Ireland has reported its first case of Clade I mpox, a rare and more severe strain of the virus, confirmed in February 2025. The patient, who returned to Ireland in January 2025 after traveling to the Democratic Republic of Congo, began showing flu-like symptoms, including fever, headaches, and distinctive skin lesions.
Dr. Emily O’Connor, infectious disease lead at the Health Service Executive (HSE), announced that this is Ireland’s first encounter with Clade I mpox. She added, “While the risk to the general public remains minimal, our focus is on monitoring close contacts and reinforcing public awareness.”
Symptoms of Clade I mpox include rashes, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. The virus spreads through close contact and contaminated materials. Authorities have identified and are observing all potential exposures, ensuring prompt action to prevent further cases.
As Ireland faces this rare case, the HSE emphasizes vaccination for high-risk groups and underscores the importance of early medical attention for symptoms.
